Sunglasses & Sustainability: Why Bio-Based Acetate Matters

The eyewear industry is at a crossroads. As consumers demand greater transparency and accountability from luxury brands, the materials behind every frame are coming under scrutiny. At Sølstrati, we made our choice early: bio-based acetate, a material rooted in nature and engineered for excellence.

01

What Is Bio-Based Acetate?

Bio-based acetate is a plant-derived alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics. While traditional acetate is made from petrochemicals, bio-based acetate replaces a significant portion of those inputs with renewable raw materials — primarily wood pulp and cotton cellulose sourced from sustainably managed forests.

The result is a frame material that looks, feels, and performs identically to conventional acetate, but with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. It retains all the properties that make acetate the preferred choice of premium eyewear makers: richness of colour, depth of pattern, warmth to the touch, and the ability to be hand-finished to perfection.

The Environmental Advantage

The shift from petroleum to plant-based feedstocks has measurable environmental benefits. Bio-based acetate generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions during production, and the raw materials are sourced from renewable, FSC-certified forests — forests that are actively managed to sequester carbon and maintain biodiversity.

At end of life, bio-based acetate is also biodegradable under industrial composting conditions, meaning that unlike conventional plastics, the material can re-enter natural cycles rather than accumulating in landfill.

For a brand like Sølstrati — built on permanence, craftsmanship, and the idea that a great pair of sunglasses should last a lifetime — this circularity matters. We are not interested in disposable fashion. We are interested in objects that carry meaning, and materials that carry responsibility.

Design Without Compromise

One of the most common misconceptions about sustainable materials is that they require a sacrifice in quality or aesthetics. With bio-based acetate, nothing could be further from the truth.

Our frames are cut from solid acetate sheets, hand-tumbled for days to achieve their satin finish, and assembled by artisans who have spent years mastering the craft. The bio-based composition does not alter the hand-finishing process, the depth of colour, or the structural integrity of the frame.

If anything, the richness of natural cellulose lends our frames a slightly warmer, more organic feel — one that deepens over time as the frame is worn and develops a patina unique to its owner.

A Conscious Choice

Choosing bio-based acetate was not a marketing decision. It was a values decision.

When we founded Sølstrati, we knew that every detail — from the hinge to the lens tint to the packaging — had to reflect our commitment to doing things properly. Using a material with unnecessary environmental harm when a responsible alternative exists would have been a contradiction at the heart of the brand.

We also recognise that no material is perfect. Bio-based acetate is not a zero-impact solution. Production still requires energy, water, and logistics. But it represents a meaningful step in the right direction, and we believe that meaningful steps, taken consistently and with transparency, are how industries change.

05

The Future of Eyewear

The luxury eyewear market is beginning to move. More brands are exploring sustainable materials, more consumers are asking questions about supply chains, and more artisans are finding that responsible sourcing and premium quality are not in conflict — they reinforce each other.

At Sølstrati, we see bio-based acetate not as a trend but as a baseline. A starting point from which we continue to evaluate every choice we make: the metals in our hinges, the finishes on our temples, the inks in our packaging. The question we ask ourselves is always the same: is there a better way to do this?

We believe there usually is — and we intend to find it.
